Establishment

The Arab Authority for Blood Transfusion Services was established by Resolution No. (118) issued during the Council of Arab Health Ministers in March 1979, under the League of Arab States.


Objectives of the Authority

  1. Enhance cooperation between blood transfusion centers in the Arab world.
  2. Benefit from Arab expertise via training, education, and exchange.
  3. Build communication with international blood transfusion organizations.
  4. Create unified Arab programs for disease testing through blood.
  5. Encourage best practices such as:
    • Proper donor selection
    • Voluntary, non-remunerated donation
    • Testing and availability of safe blood
    • Efficient use of blood components
    • Latest technologies for safety and security
    • Standardized quality systems

Organizational Structure

The Authority operates through the following bodies:

A. Board of Directors
  • One representative from each Arab country's blood transfusion sector.
  • Meets annually or extraordinarily as required.
  • Each member has one vote; decisions are by majority.
  • Responsible for leadership, recommendations, conference planning, and budgeting.
B. Scientific Advisory Board

A board of five experts from Arab countries, reappointed every four years, providing technical guidance and recommendations. Meets every two years.


Pan Arab Conferences on Blood Transfusion Services

The Arab Conference is held every two years, hosted by an Arab country or the League of Arab States if no host is designated.
